Summer In Thixendale

I'm not an astrologer, but a recent guest, a professional photographer, was convinced she could get a picture of the milky way and while I can't identify it, she did let me have some of her pictures and this one, showing the Wicket Hut in the backdrop of magnificent light with a galaxy of stars above is quite a favourite!

Although we don't have official dark sky status in Thixendale, there are no street lights so on a cloudless night, looking up is quite magnificent! At this time of year you we have to wait until later in the evening for the full effect but it is worth it. Thank you to www.thehannahali.co.uk for the pictures.

I've said it before but we are so lucky to be surrounded by a variety of wildlife. There's Buzzards and Kites, deer and owls, a whole host of birds and minibeasts! There are also some stunning and rare wild flowers which can be found in the fields, verges and in the wildflower meadow in the church. Parts of the farm have SSSI status (sites of special scientific interest) and the unique eco-system to this part of the Yorkshire Wolds is very special to us all.

We've had some wonderful five star reviews recently. You can read some of them above and access all of them on our Airbnb page. We are so grateful to guests who leave such wonderful reviews, one of the common themes is how peaceful and restful a stay at Country Huts on the Wolds is. If you need a break from the routine of everyday life and some time to reset then perhaps a visit is the perfect prescription.

With the Summer Holidays just around the corner, Wicket Hut comes into it's own. Sleeping four with a Kingsize Bed and full size adult bunk beds, it's perfect for a family trip away. The bunk beds are enclosed on all sides apart from the end and a recent guest described it as being cocooned in bed - a perfect description! Both the top and the bottom bunk have a window with a shutter, plus their own light, powerpoint and usb charging point. There are games in the huts and a croquet set so lots for the family to do together.

Country Huts on the Wolds is a great base to visit local attractions. The Maize Maze is about to open at Sledmere House, there's the Yorkshire Wold's Railway and we're just over half an hour away from the beaches of Scarborough and Bridlington.

We love a day out at the races and there are lots of family days coming up with a whole host of entertainment for children, besides the racing. Very family friendly as under 18's go for free!

Most of the weekends are full in August but we have got some days during the week free so do have a look at the calendar and get booked in!

Provided the sun makes a return, harvest is imminent. The warm weather has helped the crops to ripen and while the recent rain has been welcome we could do with everything drying out a bit so that we can get the big green machine out to combine them.

Once again we are growing peas as a break crop. Soil nutrition is really important, especially on a Wolds farm like ours which doesn't have the best soil. In order to grow crops commercially it is vital to look after the raw materials and peas replenish the nutrients in the ground. Farming sustainably is crucial to ensure productivity and food secuirty for years to come.

The sheepdog puppies are growing like mad and beginning to learn a bit more about their surroundings. They enjoy going out for walks and exploring the farm. It's a long time yet before they will start to show an interest in sheep but they are developing lots of character and are real timewasters!

Enjoy the summer, whatever you have planned and we hope to welcome you soon.
